How to Do Effective Christian Accountability

Effective christian accountability needs to be specific and frequent. The more you struggle with a sin or just something you want to get better at, the more specific and frequent accountability needs to be. I recommend daily accountability for most effectiveness. Otherwise, we tend to forget about where we messed up by the time we report in or we give ourselves too much grace.

Additionally, the farther away from the sin you get, the less clear the surrounding circumstances become. Meaning you are less analytical you are able to be with an accountability partner to discuss how you need to change since you may have forgotten the details.

How to Sustainably Do Accountability Daily

You don’t want to start out on an accountability journey that you will just quit in a few weeks or months, so you have to find something that works for you. We often start accountability when we’re motivated, but it needs to be sustainable even when motivation wanes. You need something that works even when you don’t really want to anymore. Effective christian accountability works when it is hard and easy to keep up with.

My Accountability Plan

When I asked an older man to be my accountability partner. He came up with this great idea to do a daily text that would be pretty quick and easy. We text the report to one another every night before bed, and if there is an issue; we talk about it through text or a phone call the next day. Then every so often, we meet to discuss overall themes.

Here is How the Text Looks:

Y
Y
N
N
N

Profound Right? No, It Is Simple, So It Works, and Here Is What It Means:

Y – Yes, I read the Bible today
Y – Yes, I prayed today
N – No, I didn’t do _____ sin today
N – No, I didn’t do _____ sin today (assuming there are more than one sin you are working on. You could repeat this line again and again as needed)
N – No, I didn’t lie about anything above (cause we all need that gut check)

Adjust for Your Current Fight on Sin

You would just change these to report on how the day actually went. I encourage you to apply this with one or multiple accountability partners and start being intentional about pursuing holiness and helping others pursue holiness. I encourage you to pick one older man or woman to be your primary accountability partner, since they are ahead of you and can guide you more strategically.

They also will do a better job of calling you higher—assuming you picked them wisely—than a peer might since they are less likely to be struggling with the same thing. You get a lot less “me toos” more “how are you going to do betters?” To learn more about Damien, my accountability partner who developed this system, check out his author website here.
