Is Belief In God Reasonable?

By Matt Enser

Many people think believing in God means you have to leave your brain and logic behind, but that is far from the truth. If you don’t believe, please take a moment to hear me out. There is substantial evidence that Jesus (God’s son) died and was resurrected three days later, which He did for you and me, so we can be forgiven of sin. Believing this is the core of what it means to be a Christian.

The Order Matters

It’s key to understand that a Christian belief in Jesus not because the Bible tells a Christian to believe in the Bible, but because they believe in Jesus and Jesus tells Christian the Bible is true and important. He shows us this importance by quoting it frequently and even calls out pharisees for not knowing scripture in verses like, Matthew 5:19. If he did things like this, the scriptures are was obviously important. However, Jesus is the way the truth and the life, not the Bible. I am not trying to deemphasize the importance of the Bible but want to make the point that the hill every person has to die on—literally—is if Jesus is who He said He was and if they are willing to make Jesus the Lord of their life, not the Bible. We believe the Bible because Jesus was true to His word, and He predicted His death and resurrection and historically did both of those things, we can trust that His words and the Bible are truth.

Again, the order matters, because if you struggle with one aspect of one random story in the Bible, that doesn’t mean your salvation is at stake, it means you are human. On the other hand, if you struggle with one part of the Bible and you put the Bible before Jesus, you might give up your faith.

Don’t Give Up on Faith

Please don’t get hung up on one part of the Bible that doesn’t make sense to you because in the end, it’s not the determining factor in whether or not you get to spend eternity in Heaven. You see, whether or not you believe if Jonah was actually swallowed by a big fish doesn’t get you into heaven — belief in Jesus does, according to Romans 10:9.

“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Romans 10:9

I 1000% believe if you look deeply into if Jesus really rose from the grave, you will come to the conclusion that the story of Jesus is true and that He is offering you a new life. Many people smarter than me and you started out as atheists and have looked deeply into that question and realized God is real, and He loves us. People like Lee Strobel and Antony Flew for example. I am not asking you to take my word, but investigate yourself. I recommend starting by listening to this message on “Is Belief In God Reasonable?”. It’ll take just 40 minutes of your time, but it will help you be more informed about the most important decision you will ever make. Here is a link to it on Spotify and here it is on Apple Podcast.

Please let me know in the comments if you have any questions or if I can help in your journey in any way. If you are asking questions, the best way to get answers is to join a good local church and meet with a pastor.
